FREDERICK W. BAKER

Officer Baker was stabbed and killed by an inmate. Officer Baker was supervising a cell block when an inmate stabbed him in the back. After Officer Baker's murder, although the governor's office had refused to do so previously, the governor immediately put in an order for knife resistant vests for every NJ DOC officer.

Lieutenant Boud suffered a fatal heart attack after an altercation with an inmate.



DONALD BOURNE

Sergeant Bourne was stabbed and killed by an inmate. Sergeant Bourne was in the mess hall when an inmate attacked him and killed him by stabbing him in the chest.

FRANK BUTCHER

Deputy Butcher was shot and killed by an inmate who was attempting to escape. The inmate attacked an Officer knocking him unconscious and stealing his gun. When Deputy Butcher approached the suspect, shots were exchanged, and Deputy Butcher was killed.

STANLEY BRUCE CILLS

Motor vehicle accident. Officer Cills was on on last day of vacation; when he lost lost control of his vehicle and crashed. Cills died of the injuries sustained in the crash.

Officer Cills served in United States Air Force and was Honorably Discharged. Prior to him becoming a New Jersey Correctional Officer, Officer Cills served several years as a Illinois State Trooper. He also served as an Officer at Cumberland County Sheriffs Dept.

WAYNE ROBERT CLARK

Officer Clark was killed in an automobile accident. Officer Clark was returning to the prison, when his departmental vehicle collided into the back of a truck that had stopped on the roadway.

Officer Harris suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after having a physical confrontation with a juvenile inmate. The juvenile was removed from the cell as a result of the incident. As Officer Harris collected the juvenile's belongings he collapsed.

ISAAC HIBBS

Turnkey Hibbs was shot and killed as two prisoners escaped from the Camden County Jail.

One prisoners wife was able to smuggle a revolver into the jail when she visited him.

As Turnkey Hibbs was walking through the cell block, one prisoner called to him; as Hibbs approached the prisoner was holding a piece of paper in his hand telling Hibbs to open the door that he wanted to show it to him the note. When Turnkey Hibbs opened the cell door, the prisoner dropped the paper and reveled his hidden revolver.

The prisoner ordered Turnkey Hibbs to put up his hands. When he did, the other prisoner grabbed the gun form the first prisoner and fired three shots at Turnkey Hibbs, killing him.

The two prisoners took Hibbs' keys and ran through the jail, until they encountered a jail keeper. The prisoner then pointed the revolver at the keeper and ordered him to step aside. The keeper, instead of obeying, went straight at the suspect, despite the fact that the prisoner was pointing a revolver at him. He grabbed the him, but was not able to wrestle the revolver free before the prisoner fired two shots, wounding the keeper. The prisoners then were able to make their way to the street and escape.

Both prisoners were arrested the next day along with the woman who smuggled the gun into the jail.

Officer Johnson suffered a fatal heart attack while attempting to break up a fight between two juvenile prisoners.

He was transported to a local hospital where he died a short time later.

Warden King was killed when he was assaulted by an inmate with an iron bar.

JAMES B. LIPPINCOTT

Deputy Keeper Lippincott was shot and killed by a prisoner attempting to escape. The prisoner had manufactured a saw from watch and clock springs and was able to saw through the bars on his cell. The prisoner attacked Lippincott taking his gun.

JOSEPH MICHALOWSKI

Guard Michalowski was shot and killed after being taken hostage by a prisoner who was escaping from the Middlesex County Jail. The prisoner attacked Guard Michalowski and forced him to open a secret gun locker. After taking a gun from the locker, the prisoner forced Guard Michalowski into a guard station wagon, and ordered him to drive away.

Guard Michalowski spotted a patrolman and attempted to signal him. The prisoner, seeing what was happening, shot and killed Guard Michalowski. The patrolman, alerted by the sound of the gunshots, ran to the wagon. The suspect pushed Guard Michalowski's body from the wagon and fled.

The Patrolman gave chase. The prisoner fired two shots at the patrolman, both of which missed. The patrolman returned fire, striking the suspect in the head. The suspect died the next day from his wound.

Officer Pazkowski was shot and killed when he and two other officers attempted to apprehend bank robbers. Officer Pazkowski and the other officers were transporting two prisoners from the prison to the court house when they observed four masked men exiting a bank. Officer Pazkowski and the other officers attempted to apprehend the suspects when he was fatally shot.

Keeper Tinney was shot and killed during a escape attempted from the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton. Keeper Tinney was escorting inmates to the dining hall when he was shot & killed by two imates who had weapons smuggled into the prison. After killing Keeper Tinney the inmates attempted to scale the wall. The guards in the tower opened fire on them and during the firefight both inmates were shot and wounded.
